The program spans two semesters.<\/p><p data-start=\"250\" data-end=\"420\">The program is designed to increase students\u2019 competence in traveling through mountainous and remote areas in Iceland and to safely and responsibly lead groups of people.<\/p><p data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"920\">To begin the specialization in alpine trekking guiding, applicants must have completed the basic mountaineering program (<em data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"582\">Guide studies with a focus on glacier guiding<\/em>) or other equivalent education. Preparatory programs at universities are considered equivalent to a matriculation exam. Applicants who are 18 years or older and lack formal education but have worked in tourism related to mountaineering may apply for an exemption from the admission requirements.<\/p><p data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"1227\">The theoretical courses in mountaineering at the Icelandic Mountain School are taught online, while the practical modules are conducted regularly throughout the academic year in sessions lasting 4\u20137 days at a time.
