The program Guide Specializing in Mountain Hiking is a 60-credit specialized course in mountaineering and guiding. The program spans two semesters.
The program is designed to increase students’ competence in traveling through mountainous and remote areas in Iceland and to safely and responsibly lead groups of people.
To begin the specialization in mountain hiking guiding, applicants must have completed the basic mountaineering program (Guide Specializing in Glacier Guiding), a matriculation exam, journeyman’s exam, or other equivalent education. Preparatory programs at universities are considered equivalent to a matriculation exam. Applicants who are 18 years or older and lack formal education but have worked in tourism related to mountaineering may apply for an exemption from the admission requirements.
The theoretical courses in mountaineering at the Icelandic Mountain School are taught online, while the practical modules are conducted regularly throughout the academic year in sessions lasting 4–7 days at a time. A calendar of the advanced program is available on this site to see when courses are held.
The program provides students with certification within the Association of Icelandic Mountain Guides (AIMG). Students complete AIMG Mountain Hiking Level 1, and may also take the optional course AIMG Glacier Guiding Level 2 (not mandatory).
Students also attend the Wilderness First Responder course.
Students must have their own personal equipment, and a list of the required items can be found on this site under “Equipment.” The school provides technical equipment such as tents, glacier, and climbing gear. However, students are encouraged to purchase their own specialized personal equipment during the course of their studies.
On most of the school’s field trips, students are expected to camp in tents. Access to tents is included in the tuition fees.
In some cases, students will be asked to book indoor accommodation, such as shared cabins or hostels, for which they must pay themselves.
Tuition fees are ISK 750,000 per year or ISK 350,000 per semester.
If indoor accommodation is needed, students must cover those costs themselves, as well as all costs for transport and meals during field trips.
Students are also required to own personal equipment, and if they do not already possess the necessary gear, acquiring it may incur additional expenses. More information can be found under “Equipment” on this site.
