Guide Specializing in Glacier Guiding
he program “Guide Specializing in Glacier Guiding” is a 60-credit specialized course in mountaineering and guiding. It can be completed over two or four semesters.
The program is designed to increase students’ ability to travel through mountainous and wilderness areas in Iceland and to safely and responsibly lead groups of people.
To begin the glacier guiding specialization, applicants must have completed a matriculation exam, journeyman’s exam, or other equivalent education. A preparatory program from a university is considered equivalent to a matriculation exam. Applicants who are 18 years or older without formal education but have worked in tourism involving mountaineering may apply for an exemption from the admission requirements.
The theoretical courses are taught online, while practical courses are delivered consistently throughout the semester in sessions lasting 4–7 days at a time. A calendar of the basic program is available on this site to see when courses are taught.
This program is intended as the first step toward a career in mountaineering and guiding, which can be further developed.
Students gain extensive experience in traveling through mountainous terrain and on glaciers.
The program grants students certification within the Association of Icelandic Mountain Guides (AIMG). Students complete the AIMG Glacier Guiding Level 1.
Students must have their own personal equipment, and a list of required items can be found on this site under “Equipment.” The school provides technical gear such as tents, glacier, and climbing equipment. However, students are encouraged to purchase their own specialized personal equipment during their studies.
In most field trips, students are expected to camp in tents. Access to tents used in some trips is included in the tuition fees.
In some cases, students will be asked to book indoor accommodations, such as shared cabins or hostels, which they must pay for themselves.
Tuition fees are ISK 700,000 for the year or ISK 350,000 per semester.
Students attending part-time pay ISK 200,000 per semester.
If accommodation is required, students must cover that cost themselves, as well as all expenses for transportation and food during field trips.
Students are also required to own personal gear. If they do not already own the necessary equipment, acquiring it may result in additional costs. More details can be found under “Equipment” on this site.
